Citizenship and Diaspora Directorate (CIDO) and Sixth Region Relationship
The Sixth Region is officially represented within the African Union (AU) by the Citizenship and Diaspora Directorate (CIDO), which plays a crucial role in facilitating civil society engagement and overseeing the affairs of the diaspora. Under this umbrella, the Diaspora Division operates as the counterpart to the Civil Society Division, specifically dedicated to addressing the needs and concerns of the African Diaspora.
In this capacity, the Diaspora Division assumes responsibilities akin to those of its civil society counterpart, ensuring that the interests and voices of the diaspora community are duly recognized and advocated for within the AU framework. Through strategic initiatives and collaborative efforts, it strives to enhance the participation and integration of the diaspora into AU policies and initiatives, fostering a stronger sense of belonging and representation for Africans everywhere.
CIDO serves as ECOSOCC’s Secretariat, facilitating coordination and support for its activities.
The Call to the General Assembly
On May 25, 2012, at the Declaration of the Global African Diaspora Summit in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa, The African Union recognized the global Diaspora as the Sixth Region of the continent, affirming its legitimacy and providing a platform for engagement.
Through the Economic, Social, and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC), the Diaspora now has a voice in advising the African Union on policies and programs through the ECOSOCC Assembly, but it is imperative that we get organized. By answering the call, understand that we the people of African origin have been given an opportunity to become members of the ECOSSOC Assembly to play a crucial advisory role to the African Union Heads of State.
Integrating the Diaspora into the African Union
The Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) is the civil society arm of the African Union. It advises on policy, conducts studies, and promotes human rights and Pan-African values.
To ensure global representation, the African Union Sixth Region is actively working to integrate the Pan-African Diaspora into ECOSOCC’s decision-making processes. This includes mobilizing and appointing Diaspora Civil Society Organizations to occupy designated seats within the ECOSOCC General Assembly.
Preparations are underway for regional, national, and local meetings to foster dialogue and strategic planning, ensuring Diaspora voices are fully integrated into the African Union’s decision-making. This collaborative effort aims to create a more inclusive and unified Africa for all.
